Vessel Walkthrough
The ISLAND WATERS was well on its way to an extensive refit when the oldest Robb sibling Dee passed away leaving about 40% of the renovation work to be completed. Fortunately all the work performed on the vessel to this point matched the quality and results that would make the Fairmile Construction craftsmen proud as every refurbished task undertaken by Dee until now was subject to the high standards and respect for the vessel established by Fairmile. Much of the work he commissioned was the type that took major elbow-grease to recondition and repair which included the engine room the exterior of the hull and superstructure. The hull was hand-ground to bare metal faired and repainted while the engine room appears like new with fresh paint and new or refurbished equipment and machinery that provide the vessel the readiness to cruise aboard once she has been totally refitBuilt at the historic Berwick Shipyard on the River Tweed to Lloyds Maltese 100 A1 Classification by shipwrights whose linage can be traced back to antiquity from shipbuilding tradesmen as far back in time to 1751. The ISLAND WATERS was the heaviest of the displacement trawlers built and the second largest Fairmile Yacht that was constructed in the trawler yacht series during the decade of the 1960s. At 82 feet with her 20 4 beam and 10 draft; she features twin 170 HP Caterpillar D 342 diesel motors two 40 kW Caterpillar 320 generators 5300 gallon fuel capacity for a 5000 mile range Vosper stabilizers Air Conditioning-Heating five stateroom (three with queen berths & two with single berths) four heads-three with baths one entered from outside to port on aftdeck spacious main salon with forward custom cabinet for TV stereo and books separate laundry room a galley to prepare snacks or gourmet meals and a raised wheelhouse that commands a 360 degree view
Accommodations
Entrance aboard ISLAND WATERS is gained from the port side which provides movement fore and aft on the teak overlaid side deck. Turn aft to the covered Fantail deck with its pleasing elliptical canoe-stern or move forward to the safety of the gated PortugueseBridge and the painted steel foredeck. Port and starboard side decks are covered by the bridge deck overhang or eyebrow that provides shelter for crew handling lines or passengers moving forward and aft in complete safety. The Bridge/Boat deck access is from the starboard side wing door of the wheelhouse. The substantial Promenade/Boat Deck allows ample room for entertaining viewing lounging or to secure tenders and toys aboard. The main salon is entered from the aft deck through a center-line water tight door with a step-over bulkhead sill that opens to a generous 20 X 15 main salon with a wide starboard side companionway forward to the 8 deep X 15 pilothouse. The stairwell to the private master and VIP suites is located to the port aft corner of the main salon. Located ahead of the main salons forward bulkhead is the galley. Moving forward of the galley along the starboard companionway is the stairwell to the below deck guest quarters and engine room. Mahogany steps lead to the raised 8 X 15 wheelhouse. It was the consensus among knowledgeable mariners; at the time the ISLAND WATERS was constructed that the additional length wider beam low center of gravity and heavier displacement of trawler yachts built by the Fairmile Construction Company compared most favorably against long range motor yachts constructed in previous decades. Gurnee Munn Jr. the first owner of ISLAND WATERS was convinced that the comfortable sea keeping qualities of the Fairmile 82 was due to the wide beam and length; an opinion he based upon his personal experiences aboard the vessel while crossing the Atlantic when cruising home to Florida from Scotland in stormy seas. Following that adventure; he embarked on a three year circumnavigation tour of the world.
Galley
The galley is located aft of the raised wheelhouse with access from the starboard companionway just forward of the main salon to the wheelhouse. The area is fitted with a large custom built double door refrigerator/freezer and double stainless steel sink with butcher block countertops. Pantry cupboard cabinet and drawers secure dishes cutlery and provisions for extended cruises.
Construction
The Fairmile Construction Company LTD at the Berwick Shipyard Upon-the-River Tweed Scotland had a reputation for construction of heavy built military launches for the Royal Navy during WW II and continued with fishing trawlers ferries tugs and yachts following the war. The Corten steel hull is fabricated with compartmentalized heavy watertight transverse steel bulkheads fitted with water-tight batten-down doors to seal-out the possibility of water intrusion. The Corten steel hull plates are 3/8 welded and riveted on transverse frames 3 X 1/4 angle on 16 centers with longitudinal stringers of 3 X angle on 3 centers. The Bow Crash Bulkhead and Aft Athwartships Crash Bulkhead provide safety against flooding if struck or damaged. The steel hull was welded and riveted in a time intensive process while the steel decks and boat deck the raked and flared bow were welded. The decks were overlaid with 2 teak and teak cap rails and trim are affixed to bulwarks. ISLAND WATERS was constructed to Lloyds of London Maltese 100 A-1 which was renewed in 1976 and 1981.

Electrical
Due to the need for redundancy and back-up requirements on extended voyages the ISLAND WATERS has two model D-320 Caterpillar 3 phase 110/240 Volt 40 Kw generators; one fitted with air start and the other with hydraulic start. The main 150 lbs. PSI air compressor is new. There are numerous bilge pumps freshwater circulating pumps hydraulic pumps and saltwater pumps aboard.
Engine Details and Mechanical Equipment
The main 170 HP air start Caterpillar D-342 diesel engines are in excellent running condition. As with nearly all Long Range Cruisers of that era the motors are dry stack exhaust which flows out through the funnel located aft of the Wheelhouse cabin top. The Main Engines and Generators are Fresh-Water-Cooled through Heat Exchangers located within the vessel interior with Cool Raw Sea Water supplied by two sea chests eliminating the need for multiple through-hole fittings for machinery cooling. The machinery and engine room equipment is cruise ready. Air Compressors supply air to pressure tanks for starting both main motors and one generator. Three heavy chemical fire retardant bottles are fitted within the engine room for safety in the event of fire. The Lube Oil Tank is 150 gallons and a 500 Gallon Day Tank with a visual sight gauge is located on the forward engine room bulkhead which provides gravity feed of fuel to the diesel motors while underway. Tools workbench storage and handsome Mahogany Engineers Desk make the heart of the ISLAND WATERS a well organized small ship to safely function under all conditions when cruising extended passages to far distant locales. Vosper stabilizers were installed in 1976. Twin 48 X 41 three-blade Bronze propellers stainless steel shafts and a massive barn-door type rudder are fitted aboard.
